Clarification from MCEP on Sedation Services

MCEP has tremendous respect for the training, unique skill set, and dedication of our anesthesiologist colleagues and values their unique place within the House of Medicine. For decades, varying emergency medicine groups have been providing sedation services in collaboration with their departments of anesthesiology for specific procedures.

MCEP supports emergency physicians who are operating within their scope of practice and abilities. Providing sedation is something that is not only a core competency of emergency medicine training, but also a skill set that emergency physicians are credentialed for in their respective hospitals.

Patients should know that when they are receiving care from a board-certified/board-eligible emergency physician that they are in skilled hands that will provide safe care.

We all want to work together to take care of our patients safely and support physician-led care teams throughout the House of Medicine as the gold standard for medical treatment.
